On March.18^th 2008, I am very glad to have a chance to have an interview with the dean of our English Department Mr. Huang Jinqiao. As the dean of the English Department, Mr. Huang, together with his colleagues, has worked out several “English-Improved Projects”, such as “1346” “MASS”, etc. And the students benefit a lot from these. Therefore, the topic of this conversation is about the progress we have made in the past years and some ways to improve our English.

In the course of conversation, when it comes to the success we have made in CET-4. Mr. Huang said: “I’m not surprised at the result as we have made a lot of efforts in it. Actually, you deserve it.” As we know, “as a man sows, so he will reap”.

When I asked, “Many students have passed CET-4. They said the extensive reading class of English on science and technology play a vital role in preparation for the test. What’s your opinion about it?” He told us, “There are dozens of reasons behind this, including enlarging our vocabulary, enhancing our reading skills, and broadening our horizon. Another underlying reason is that the books we learned are original. The more time we exposed to these original works, the better we will be on the way to the pyramids of English. Most importantly, we have a comprehensive testing system in which the students are required to take part in the dictation and oral examinations, which proves to a very efficient approach to make sure that the students can have a good command of what they have learned.”

In addition, Mr. Huang gave us some suggestions on how to make an adequate preparation for the coming test and how to improve our English proficiency. To be frank, we have learned a lot from this talk. Some of his advice is beneficial to our study.

From this conversation we can easily draw the conduction that our fates lie in our own hands and we can steel them with our determinations and efforts. As an old saying goes, “God helps those who help themselves.”
